For more than 100 years the City of Ouray has closed a one-block section of 5th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues) to provide a place for the youth, and young at heart, to go sledding. This north-facing hill is typically closed to vehicle traffic (but opened for sleds, tubes, and toboggans) from mid-December to early March, depending upon winter conditions. Bring your own sleds, warm clothes, and enjoy an afternoon on this historic local sledding hill. Status is weather-dependent. Please call our Visitor Center for up-to-date info: 970-325-3954.

Vinegar Hill SleddingAfter making several runs on the sledding hill visit one of Ouray’s popular restaurants and warm up in the Hot Springs Pool. There is a story that Vinegar Hill got its name because some of the families in the area were known for making ‘vinegar’ during prohibition in the 1920’s. It is rumored that the ‘vinegar’ had a pleasant flavor, much like wine.
